creative creations

Let me be clear, I don’t need any more hobbies.  I can’t seem to balance all of my current creative interests, let alone adding some oldies but goodies into the mix.  But I couldn’t resist knitting again after buying an uncovered throw pillow I found on sale.  It’s been sitting in its naked state on the futon in my studio for a few weeks.  I couldn’t take it anymore and decided to clothe it with a knitted pillowcase.  Of course my craft box didn’t contain the color yarn I wanted, so I meandered down to a charming shop called Loop.

It turns out this knitters’ haven is owned by an American (and apparently staffed by Americans and a Canadian).  Since North American accents pierce the air here, they tend to be conservation starters.  So one “Where are you from?” conversation and several balls of yarn later, I’m back home not working, but knitting.  But it doesn’t stop there.  Now I’m tempted to join some knitting groups.  Maybe I should see how my first guitar lesson goes next week before I join something else.  I think I need an artistic intervention.

It’s so very simple.  Of course people will pay to make crafty stuff and be social.  I’m sure I’m not the first person to press my face against the window of The Make Lounge and maybe drool a little (it might have also been at the cupcake decorating workshop in session inside).

This small business is entirely too close to my flat.  I might have to talk to my fiance about reworking our budget to account for a monthly DYI 101 class.  Eh hm, you can also buy gift certificates for friends on their website.  I think it’s time I started celebrating my half birthday.

I spent most of my workday on Friday on the phone selling tickets to last night’s DinnerWorks Gala Dinner.  I did better than I expected; so well in fact, my boss told me to pick which of the 15 tables I wanted to sit at with my guests.  Of course I picked the table that came packaged with a creative activity.  My choice was a creation designed by a group of art students at St X high school.  The ceramic dishes by Neil Patterson inspired the students to make our table into an art studio: flatware doubled as paintbrushes, the place mats were painting palates, our chairs were drawing benches, and every place setting had a small easel in front of it.  The students left instructions for us to draw our table companions.  There was some resistance at first, but by the time the serving staff brought dinner, the newly budding artists were scrambling to find room on the table that didn’t interfer with their artmaking.

I had an absolute blast and was incredibly impressed that my friends came together at the last minute to support the exhibit and LVAA.  It was one of those times where I said to myself, “I can’t believe I’m getting paid for this.”

Finally, I have arisen from my Christmas funk.  Nat King Cole is singing “Merry Christmas to you me” and the decorations have been drug (that’s Kentucky-speak for “dragged”) out of the basement.  I didn’t get a tree this year, but that didn’t stop me.  Six nails, two strands of lights, and one doorway did the job.

V-O-T-E

I wasn’t given an “I voted” sticker at my polling station. Then I hear Starbucks is giving free coffee to peeps wearing such stickers! Soooo, I made my own using a photo of my actual ballot from this morning. We’ll see what my Starbuck’s barista thinks of that!

GO OBAMA!!!!!

No other holiday can hold a candle to Halloween! It’s a shame we don’t dress in hysterical costumes, give treats away to strangers, and illuminate weird carved faces into root vegetables more often. I should also add to the activities list: dance to sassy pop songs choreographed by amateur dancers who took a dance class once in college. Hey look, I got the shimmy down! Thanks Erin for the lesson.

You can see all of the photos from last night’s festivities here.

I was browsing through Etsy the other night and after tagging tons of jewelry, decided that I was going to make some jewelry myself (sorry Etsy artists). I spent an hour at Dee’s craft store the next day buying beads, latches, and so on. I invited two girlfriends over last night to join me in a impromptu craft night. We chatted, got “cubed,” and made jewelry. Here are the fruits of our labor…
